Mary adopts new artistic styles every
once in a while in response to change in her life or a time of deep introspection. Her first solo art opening in 2002 featured vivid sunsets and raging thunderstorm paintings. It reflected a period of personal grief after the loss of her father.
Mary Lanka’s plein air work is rooted in her love of painting outdoors and in the beauty of natural light. She paints at several state and county parks, nature preserves, and botanical gardens throughout Michigan's midwest region.

Other favorite locations include Ottawa Sands County Park, Hemlock Crossing County Park, Kirk Park County Park, Kitchell/Lindquist Hartger Dune Preserve, and Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.
